Our Renovation is Scheduled to Start: How do I Prepare?

Knowing how to prepare for your renovation and what to expect during the renovation are two important elements that many clients ask us about before we begin on-site. In order to assist you we have compiled this informative list of things to know and do.

Helpful Things to Know Before We Arrive:

  • Schedule. Before we begin you will receive a renovation schedule. This will help you to plan accordingly and potentially be away during disruptive stages.

  • Hours of Operation. Our typical hours of work for renovations are 7:30am to 5:00pm.

  • Alarm codes and Keys. Providing us with a key or garage entry code allows us entry to your home when you are not home alleviating any disruption to your schedule.

  • Site Safety. For your safety we ask that you wear proper personal protective equipment on site. Please do not bring friends and relatives through the renovation while we are working.

  • Children. Construction sites pose numerous dangers to children. Children are not allowed on the construction site.

  • Pets. Renovating can be stressful on pets so please let us know what to do if your pet “gets out” and what doors or gates must be kept closed.

  • Parking. Please inform us of any restrictions to parking on your street. As well, let us know of any specific concerns your neighbours may have.

  • Conduct. You can expect that our team of workers will be courteous and professional. Please let us know how we are doing.

  • Yard Signs. We would like to put a sign on your front yard. The sign serves the following purposes – marker for material deliveries and subcontractors, neighbour inquires if necessary, and the majority of our business comes from job observation and ‘word-of-mouth’ advertising.

Doing Our Part

Slotegraaf makes every effort to ensure that your existing home is protected from dust and dirt. We put down drop sheets on the floors, tape down heavy plastic in doorways and over vents, and do daily housekeeping to minimize dust travel.

Some Helpful Recommendations For You:

  1. Pack away as many belongings as possible, sealing the boxes with tape or cover with sheets to keep dust and sawdust out.

  2. Cover furniture or anything that may be damaged by dust.

  3. Change your furnace filter often.

  4. Remove pictures and mirrors on walls in neighbouring rooms that may be affected if there are vibrations in the walls.

  5. Cover or close vents if possible to minimize dust travel through the home.

  6. Move any plants or trees outside to ensure they are not damaged.

Enjoy Your Renovation

Remember your home will soon become a worksite. We will do our best to minimize any inconvenience, recognizing the fact we are entering your personal space. With patience, consistent communication and deliberate preparation the process will go smoothly and your home will soon be ‘Built Right’ and completed ‘On Time’.
